The Chairman of the Amadiama Council of Chiefs, Oliver Olunwa, has called on the Rivers State Government to accelerate debris removal at the site of the collapsed five-storey building on Odili Road, Port Harcourt.
Olunwa said the slow pace of the operation had reduced the chances of rescuing anyone who might still be trapped beneath the rubble. He expressed particular concern about the reported disappearance of a woman and her children who were said to have been trading beneath the building before it collapsed.
He also appealed to neighbouring communities not to exploit the incident by making territorial claims.
Responding to the concerns, the Permanent Secretary in the Rivers State Ministry of Special Duties, Sokari George, said the building’s lift shaft does not currently pose a threat to nearby residents. He added that the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Housing Authority, is working to ensure the rubble is cleared as quickly as possible.
