Police Deploy DIGs Across Geopolitical Zones to Tackle Insecurity

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to all six geopolitical zones of the country as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and address growing insecurity.

The deployment, which takes effect on June 15, 2026, was announced during the Monthly Strategic Conference with senior police officers in Abuja. The IGP said the move is aimed at improving supervision, coordination, and accountability across police formations nationwide.

He also directed the immediate enforcement of regulations against vehicles without registration plates and those with concealed, defaced, or altered number plates.

However, some security experts have expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the measure. Security analyst Stanley Nsofor said deploying DIGs alone would not solve the country’s security challenges, stressing the need for the adoption of modern technology in crime fighting.

Another security analyst, Charles Inko-Tariah, acknowledged that the deployment could strengthen operational capacity but argued that it was not a long-term solution. He noted that the Nigeria Police Force lacks adequate personnel to effectively combat crime and called for stronger efforts to curb the proliferation of arms across the country.
