The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned what it described as excessive and impractical bail conditions imposed by courts and law enforcement agencies across the country.
In a statement signed by its President, Afam Osigwe, the association said the practice has effectively transformed bail into a form of pre-trial detention.
The NBA noted that many accused persons remain in custody despite being granted bail because they are unable to meet the stringent conditions attached.
The association maintained that bail is intended to guarantee the appearance of suspects in court and should remain reasonable and achievable in accordance with constitutional provisions.
