The Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has called for a reduction in discretionary government spending, including the activities of the National Assembly, to free up funds for addressing Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
Speaking on the growing fiscal pressures facing the country, Ndume proposed that lawmakers could convene less frequently, suggesting a quarterly sitting schedule with salaries and allowances adjusted accordingly. He argued that such measures would demonstrate leadership sacrifice and redirect critical resources to where they are most urgently needed.
Ndume stressed that Nigeria must cut down on expenditures that offer little benefit to the wider population and instead prioritise investments in public safety. He noted that insecurity remains the nation’s most pressing challenge and requires stronger, better-funded interventions to protect citizens across affected regions.
