The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced a new date for the conduct of the local government elections in the state, now scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Chairman of RSIEC, Michael Odey, made this known during the official unveiling of the revised timetable for the polls. Odey explained that the decision to shift the election date was informed by prevailing circumstances in the state, which necessitated a review of the electoral schedule.

He cited constitutional provisions that empower the Commission to reschedule elections in situations of crisis or potential unrest, assuring that the decision was taken in the best interest of ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process.

Odey further reassured the public that RSIEC is fully prepared to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election, adding that the Commission would adhere strictly to all electoral guidelines. He emphasized that voters would be able to cast their votes without fear, harassment, or intimidation.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has pledged to provide adequate security before, during, and after the elections. The police assured residents of their safety, stressing that all necessary measures will be put in place to maintain law and order throughout the electoral exercise.
