The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the arrest of 26 individuals suspected to be the masterminds behind the recent killings in Yelwata, Benue State. Speaking at a news conference held in Abuja on Tuesday, the IGP disclosed that law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing additional suspects believed to have participated in the attack that resulted in the tragic loss of 47 lives.
Addressing concerns over security challenges, IGP Egbetokun reassured Nigerians that the police are not overwhelmed. He explained that efforts are underway to mop up illegal small and light weapons that have been illegally acquired by certain individuals, which could potentially escalate violence in the region.
The police chief emphasized the commitment of security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice and restore peace to the affected communities in Benue State.
