The Nigerian Army has risen in defence of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General TUKUR BURATAI, over allegation of fraud.
The reaction is based on a petition by a group known as Save the Nation Movement, which called for General BURUTAI to be investigated in connection with the probe into defence procurement under past administrations. The group justified its call on the basis that General BURUTAI had served as Director of Procurement at the Defence Headquarters at some point. But in a statement released by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel SANI USMAN, the Nigerian Army said the group, which it described as faceless, was merely trying to rubbish the hard-earned reputation of the Chief of Army Staff.Colonel USMAN noted that the group failed to get its facts right, adding that contrary to its claim, General BURATAI only served as Director of Procurement at the Defence Headquarters from March 2014 to May 2015; and not from 2012 to 2015.The Army spokesman further noted that Defence Procurement in Nigeria is decentralised; so that each Service is responsible for its procurement. He said the Chief of Army Staff has never been involved in any questionable act throughout his career as a military officer, let alone when he was at the Defence Headquarters.
