UEFA Declines New Red Card Rule for Players Covering Mouths

UEFA has announced that players who cover their mouths during confrontations with opponents will not be shown red cards in its competitions.

The European football body said it would not adopt the new rule in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League next season.

The law change, which makes the act punishable by a red card, was championed by FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, as part of efforts to create a deterrent ahead of the World Cup.

The amendment was approved by the International Football Association Board in April, but UEFA has now opted not to implement it in its club competitions.
