The TUC in Rivers State has therefore cautioned the Rivers State House of Assembly against giving legislative backing to the Rivers State Social Services Levy and any other new tax that would be imposed on workers.

State Chairman of TUC, CHIKA ONUEGBU, said the position of the union on the social services levy is very clear.

ONUEGBU recalled that the law had been resisted during the immediate past administration and would also be resisted under the present dispensation.
The TUC Chairman also noted that a court had ruled against the controversial law and similar laws that were considered to give room for double taxation.

He said the TUC Rivers State and her affiliate unions never paid the social services contributory levy and were also not part of its Board.

CHIKA ONUEGBU threatened that Labour shall resist the planned imposition of additional hardship on workers through the introduction of additional taxes.

The labour leader said the Rivers Government is bound by the Taxes and Levies (approved list for collection) Act, and therefore the State House of Assembly to avoid unnecessarily heating up the polity and focus on making laws that will improve the welfare of ordinary people of Rivers State.
