The National Assembly has invoked its constitutional powers to assume the legislative responsibility of the Kogi State House of Assembly.
Our Abuja correspondent, JAMES IGAH reports that the decision was taken in a concurrent vote of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The move is in response to the inability of the Kogi State House of Assembly to perform its legislative functions due to prevailing crisis and volatile security situation in the state.The National Assembly also overruled the impeachment proceedings carried out by five members of the Kogi State House of Assembly.
The federal lawmakers the role played by the Nigeria Police Force in providing security cover for five out of twenty members of the state assembly to subvert the constitution and commit illegality.In his contribution to debate, Senator JAMES MANAGER observed that there was a need to also reinstate the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly who was impeached by the five lawmakers.However; Senator DINO MELAYE suggested that the Senate should not take over the state legislature, stressing that there was a judicial remedy to the situation.Senator MELAYE’s submission was knocked out in an overwhelming voice vote that concurred with the decision of the House of Representatives.In his remarks after the vote, Senate President BUKOLA SARAKI warned that acts of illegality would not be condoned by the Eighth Assembly.
