The Federal Government has launched what it calls Recovery and Peace Building Assessment Programme for the states in the North East Geo-Political Zone.
The programme, which is in conjunction with the World Bank, the European Union and the United Nations, is in furtherance of government’s determination to rebuild and rehabilitate the region. The initiative is to be conducted within the framework of the Joint EU-UN-WB Declaration on International Crisis Recovery Cooperation with the North-East states. The Special Adviser to the President on Social Investments, MARIAM UWAIS, said the programme would essentially build upon existing initiatives produced at the federal and state levels.UWAIS noted that such platform with details gathered would afford this country the veritable foundation for social interventions at all levels as well provide minimum standards and criteria to monitor the implementation of projects at all levels of government. On his part, the Director of World Bank Country, RACHID BENMESSAOUD expressed displeasure that insurgency in the North East had claimed several lives and created a lot of humanitarian problems.
