Suspected armed robbers yesterday stormed a commercial bank around Mile One Market in Port Harcourt, but failed to accomplish their mission due to speedy intervention by the police.

Suspected armed robbers yesterday stormed a commercial bank around Mile One Market in Port Harcourt, but failed to accomplish their mission due to speedy intervention by the police.A witness to the incident confirmed in an interview with our correspondent that the robbers struck soon after a bullion van arrived at the bank premises to offload cash.Our source said the hoodlums shot sporadically to scare away passersby and gain access into the bank, before the police responded.The spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, AHMAD MUHAMMAD, later confirmed in a statement that the bullion van was conveying huge volume of cash when the robbers attacked.The statement also noted that a policeman and a bank official sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to hospital for treatment, while one AK-47 rifle, which was loaded with eighty four rounds of ammunition and four magazines were recovered.
The Police spokesman said the State Police Command assures the people of Rivers State of the readiness of its operatives to confront any security challenge at all times.
