The move comes amid heightened tensions following the recent ruling by the International Court for Arbitration, which nullified China’s claims in the region.
The Chinese government has since vowed to ignore the ruling, and the defence ministry announced that the joint military will take place in September.
Spokesman for the ministry YANG YUJUN said drills would be routine, and would not target any third party.
