This followed a motion moved by the Deputy Senate President IKE EKWEREMADU, seeking to activate a 2014 agreement between ?Nigeria and the UK government.

Senator EKWREMADU expressed concern that the UK government has commences the return of Nigerians sentenced to prison in that country without meeting the conditions set out in the accord.

EKWEREMADU cited Section 12 of the Nigerian Constitution, which provides that no treaty between the Federation and any other country shall have the force of law without an enabling legislation enacted by the National Assembly.

Consequently, the Senate Committees on Judiciary and Foreign Affairs were directed to invite the Attorney General of the Federation to shed light on the issue of transfer of prisoners from the UK.

The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Prison Service is also expected to brief the Committee on his level of involvement and compliance, while the committee has been given four weeks to report progress at plenary?.
