Sanitation Volunteers in Rivers State Raise Alarm Over Indiscriminate Disposal of Medical Waste in Port Harcourt

The Sanitation Marshal Volunteers in Rivers State have expressed deep concern over the alarming practice of indiscriminate disposal of medical waste along the streets of Port Harcourt by various health institutions.

In an interview with our correspondent, Racheal Ramson, the group’s coordinator, Prince Sodin Akiagba, described the situation as “disheartening and unacceptable.” He emphasized that dumping hazardous medical waste on public roads not only endangers the health of citizens but also threatens the environment.

Prince Akiagba called on the Rivers State Government to take immediate action by establishing a dedicated committee responsible for the proper management and disposal of medical waste across the state. He warned that if urgent measures are not taken, the health risks and environmental hazards associated with this practice could escalate further.

“Our people’s health and our environment are at serious risk. It is high time the authorities stepped in to enforce proper waste management protocols,” he urged. “Time is running out, and we must act now before the situation worsens.”

The Sanitation Marshal Volunteers remain committed to advocating for a cleaner and healthier Rivers State, but they stress that government intervention is crucial to effectively curb this dangerous practice.
