A Professor of Materials Chemistry at Rivers State University, Joshua Konne, has developed a new treatment agent aimed at improving environmental remediation efforts.
Delivering the university’s 135th inaugural lecture, Professor Konne disclosed that the patent for the innovation is undergoing final review at the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office in Abuja.
He proposed that the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) partner in the mass production of the agent for use at remediation sites across the Niger Delta.
The professor also lamented the absence of a central laboratory in the region, noting that researchers are often compelled to send samples to northern Nigeria for analysis.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University, Professor Isaac Zeb-Opibi, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Blessing Jaja, announced that the university has commenced plans to establish a regional central laboratory and commended Professor Konne for developing local solutions to environmental challenges.
