Road to Rivers Peace; Meeting Expected to hold in Port Harcourt Following Abuja Meeting

The meeting is to be convened by both Governor WIKE NYESOM and his predecessor and Minister of Transport, ROTIMI AMAECHI.

The revelation was made in a statement released by the Nigeria Police High Command, which did not spell out details of the proposed next round of talks.

It is the expectation of the Nigeria Police Force that the forthcoming meeting in Port Harcourt would solidify the commitment of the principal political actors to peace at the Abuja meeting.

The development was contained in a statement released by the Nigeria Police High Command confirming the Abuja peace meeting between security chiefs and the main political actors from Rivers State.

In a statement tagged “Roadmap to Peace in Rivers State”, the Police High Command said the meeting was called at the instance of the Acting Inspector-General of Police, IBRAHIM IDRIS and the Director-General of Department of State Service, Alhaji MUSA DAURA.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DON AWUNAH, said the meeting was part of efforts to guarantee violent-free and credible re-run legislative elections in Rivers State.

Rivers State Governor, NYESOM WIKE and his predecessor and now Minister of Transport, ROTIMI AMAECHI were also in attendance.

DON AWUNAH who is a Deputy Commissioner of Police said the meeting deliberated on the overall need to have peaceful, free and fair election devoid of violence, in Rivers State, which was the hallmark of previous elections in the state.

The Force spokesman said Governor WIKE and his predecessor; ROTIMI AMAECHI resolved to be irrevocably committed to lasting peace in the state, just as they vowed to play by the rules in the forthcoming re-run elections.

The outcome of the meeting also indicates that the two principal actors in Rivers politics also agreed to prevail on their teaming supporters to adhere to their commitment to peace and security in the state.
