Ahead of the predicted flooding in Rivers State by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the State Flood Management Committee has reactivated six Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the Orashi region.
The Rivers State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Flood Committee, Professor Ngozi Ordu, announced this on Thursday while monitoring a voluntary clean-up and sensitization campaign on drainages and canals organized by a coalition of Civil Society and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs).
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, Boma Wakama, Professor Ordu said the IDP camps are fully ready for use. Wakama, who is also a member of the committee, dismissed reports that some Orashi communities are already flooded as claimed by the Orashi National Congress.
Another member of the committee and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development, Nwizug Gonee Gordon, said the government will soon roll out intervention measures to mitigate the impact of possible flooding.
The Project Coordinator of the Homeland Awareness and Sensitization Initiative, and Convener of the Coalition of Human Rights Groups in Rivers State, Charles Nkotaria, explained that the coalition embarked on the clean-up exercise in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor to help clear water channels and reduce the risk of flooding.
The three-day exercise is expected to end on Saturday.
