Rivers State Pensioners Decry Lack of Welfare Improvements Two Months After State of Emergency Declaration

Two months after the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, pensioners in the region are expressing frustration over the failure to address their welfare needs.

President Bola Tinubu announced the emergency rule on March 18, this year, which suspended all democratic structures in Rivers State. However, pensioners who spoke to our reporter lamented that their appeals for better welfare have been ignored by the Sole Administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas.

The senior citizens alleged that many of their members are suffering from illness, and some have died due to a lack of funds for feeding and medication, following delays in implementing a proper pension scheme in the state.

The pensioners have appealed urgently to the Sole Administrator to expedite the process of increasing and paying pensions and gratuities owed to retirees, emphasizing the critical need to improve their living conditions amidst the ongoing crisis.
