RIVERS AT 59: STAKEHOLDERS REFLECT ON PROGRESS, CHALLENGES

As Rivers State marks 59 years since its creation, stakeholders have continued to reflect on the achievements and challenges confronting the state.

Rivers State was created on May 27, 1967, under Decree 14 issued by former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, from part of the old Eastern Region.

Speaking on the anniversary, former Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Ogbonna Nwuke, said there is much to celebrate about the state, noting that Rivers has recorded significant milestones in several sectors over the years.

Nwuke, however, expressed concern over what he described as the emasculation of the state for selfish political interests.

Meanwhile, human rights activist, Celestine Akpobari, lamented that Rivers remains largely dependent on Port Harcourt for development, describing it as unfortunate that other parts of the state have not witnessed similar growth.

Akpobari called for the development of other cities across Rivers State to drive balanced growth and economic expansion.

He also urged the Rivers State Government to adopt the Lagos State model in accelerating infrastructure and economic development across the state.
