Public Health Advocate Emphasizes the Vital Role of Sleep During Rivers State University Walk for Life

Dr. Priye Olise, a renowned public health physician, has underscored the importance of adequate sleep for individuals of all ages and genders, describing it as a cornerstone of good health. His remarks came during the May edition of Rivers State University’s “2.5 Walk for Life” event.

Dr. Olise explained that consistently getting fewer than seven hours of sleep per night is linked to a range of health problems, including stroke, hypertension, and other cardiovascular conditions. He urged participants to prioritize rest as part of a healthy lifestyle.

In addition, the Director of Health Services at Rivers State University, Dr. Dagogo Cookey-Gam, advised both academic and non-academic staff to manage their schedules efficiently to ensure sufficient rest. He announced that free medical screenings for university staff will commence this month, an initiative spearheaded by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zep-Obipi.

Meanwhile, Professor Zep-Obipi expressed concern over the low uptake of the NELFUND student loan scheme within the university, revealing that only about 15% of students have accessed the loan. He emphasized the need to increase awareness about the scheme, especially among students who are contemplating withdrawing due to financial difficulties.

The Vice Chancellor urged the Students’ Union Government and university staff to intensify efforts in promoting the loan scheme and supporting students to stay in school, stressing that financial challenges should not hinder students’ academic pursuits.
