The Inspector General of Police, IBRAHIM IDRIS said police officers and officers of sister security agencies displayed exemplary conduct and professionalism during the election in Edo.
IGP IDRIS said the Police Management Team, after a thorough appraisal and review of the execution of the security operations for the election, expressed full satisfaction with the performance of officers and men to ensure peaceful atmosphere across the state.
A statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, DONALD AWUNAH noted that preliminary reports by international and local observers and election monitors indicate that the security template implemented before, during and after the election was a departure from previous elections which in most cases were fraught with loss of life and property.
The statement noted that the exceptional performance of the Nigeria Police Force in the election exemplified the determination of the Inspector General of Police to ensure that Election Security in the country is implemented based on international standards and policing with integrity.
He said the outcome of the Edo State governorship election will serve as an index of future elections.
The Force spokesman said there was no doubt that the security component of the election was conducted transparently and in accordance with the principles of democratic policing.
He said the Edo governorship election has proved from the policing perspective that the Nigeria Police Force has the capacity, knowledge, ability and personnel to protest and safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.
