Our correspondent reports that hundreds of youth marched from Kaani to Bori, the headquarter town of Khana, to register their grievances with the government authorities and security agencies.

One of the participants in the protest, GOODLUCK NDOLO, who is a lecturer at the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, said part of their concern is that there was no Environmental Impact Assessment before embarking on the dredging of the Kaani river.

Additionally, GOODLUCK NDOLO said the size of the dredger that has already been moved to site is not meant for such river, adding that dredging the Kaani river could also threaten the bridge linking the community to Bori.

GOODLUCK NDOLO who spoke with our correspondent on telephone said several attempts to get the government authorities and the company involved in the dredging operation have failed.

The Kaani protest comes two days after the Ogoni Soidarity Forum warned about imminent crisis in the area as a result of sand dredging for the construction of the SaKpenwa-Bori road project being undertaken by the Rivers State Government.
