The Orashi National Congress, ONC, has urged Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to urgently reinstate the state’s flood committee to address the growing threat of flooding in vulnerable communities.
The President General of the Congress, Ambassador Emeni Ibe, made the call in an open letter to the governor following recent flooding incidents in parts of Erema Town and other communities in the Orashi Region.
Ibe warned that recurring floods continue to pose serious threats to lives, property, farmlands and businesses across the state.
He attributed the worsening situation to outdated drainage infrastructure, blocked channels and the obstruction of natural watercourses.
The ONC President General called on the state government to immediately conduct a comprehensive assessment of drainage systems across the Orashi Region, while clearing blocked waterways and reconstructing inadequate drainage facilities.
He stressed that urgent preventive measures were needed before the rainy season reaches its peak to avert further flooding disasters.
Ibe also reaffirmed the readiness of the Orashi National Congress to collaborate with the Rivers State Government in protecting communities affected by flooding, emphasizing that prevention remains the most effective response to environmental hazards.
