This is because the communities have put together a committee to interface with the Federal government and the oil multinational operating in the area on the need to clean up and carry out remediation work on the polluted soil and to pay compensation to affected communities.
The paramount ruler of Owaza community in Asa in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, Obioma Nwogu who spoke to newsmen after inaugurating the committee complained that for over fifty years of operation, Shell Petroleum Development Company were yet to create any impact in the community.
Eze Nwogu said despite their contribution to the economy of the nation, they still suffer ill health, lack of educational facilities, youth unemployment amongst others which he said have contributed to the insecurity in the area.
The Chairman of the Committee, Gani Toba called on the company to come to a round table with the host communities.
