The Ogun State Government has issued a warning to residents of communities located along major rivers and coastal areas to relocate to safer grounds due to the risk of flooding.
The affected areas include communities adjoining the Ogun, Ilo, Iju, Owa, and Yemule rivers, such as Isheri, Warewa, Akute, parts of Abeokuta, Ayetoro, Itele, and Iju. Others are coastline settlements in Makun, Oni, Iwopin, Igele, Ifaara in Ogun Waterside, Ebute-Imobi in Ijebu East, as well as Tungeji Island and Agosasa in Ipokia Local Government Area.
The government explained that the warning follows predictions of high rainfall, possible river overflow, sea water rise, and tidal lock, compounded by inflows from northern Nigeria and neighbouring countries such as Benin, which are expected to affect downstream areas in Ogun and Lagos states.
Authorities advised residents in the identified locations to take precautionary measures and move to safer environments to avoid loss of lives and property.
