NOSDRA Launches Investigation Into Illegal Disposal of Oily Waste in Rivers Communities

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) says it has received disturbing reports of the careless disposal of base oil and drilling mud in the Iriebe and Igbo Etche communities of Rivers State by unidentified individuals.

In a statement issued by its Director General, Emeka Woke, the agency warned that such activities pose severe threats to the environment, public health, and community safety. He noted that the illegal disposal also constitutes a clear violation of the agency’s oil spill and oily waste management regulations.

According to the statement, NOSDRA has begun preliminary site assessments and environmental sampling in partnership with the Rivers State Ministry of Environment and other relevant stakeholders. Woke added that preparations are underway for a full-scale investigation, with a firm commitment to prosecute and sanction any individuals or groups found culpable.

The NOSDRA boss emphasised that the handling and disposal of oily waste, including drilling muds, must strictly adhere to approved standards covering waste treatment, transportation, and disposal. He urged contractors, operators, and service providers in the oil and gas sector to comply with national regulations and adopt globally accepted environmental best practices at all times.

NOSDRA also called on residents, industry workers, and the general public to stay alert and promptly report any incidents of illegal waste disposal, oil spills, or pipeline vandalism to the agency via the emergency lines: 08168308826 and 08156260257.
