No state has approval to arm security outfits, Presidency replies Akeredolu

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State had alleged that if the Federal Government could allow a security outfit in Katsina State to carry arms, nothing should stop him from doing the same for officers of the south west region;Security Network, code-named Amotekun.

But presidential media aide Garba Shehu on Tuesday, said there is no state in the country that has been authorized to procure automatic weapons for their security outfits.

He explained that in Katsina State which was cited, Governor Aminu Masari wrote to explain that his administration only invited the Provost of the Civil Defence Training College in Katsina to train their Vigilantes in the handling and operations of Pump Action Rifles, emphasizing that the Vigilantes were not trained to take over the responsibilities of the nation’s security agencies but to assist them.

The media aide who reiterated the President directive that nobody is allowed to illegally carry AK-47 or any other automatic weapons, warned that law enforcement agencies have been directed to deal with anyone who flout the law
