Nigerian Senate Charges Federal, States and Local Government to Step Up Measures to Combat Monkey Pox

Senator MAGNUS ABE of the APC for Rivers South-East Senatorial District joined his colleagues in calling for the mobilisation of all resources of government to prevent the outbreak from evolving to an epidemic.
Senator ABE observed that poor hygiene and uncontrolled interaction with animals could be responsible for the outbreak of monkey pox in humans.
At the end of the deliberations, the Senate resolved to urge the Federal Ministry of Health, as well as affected states and local governments to be proactive in containing the spread of monkey pox disease.
The lawmakers also called for aggressive enlightenment of citizens about measures that can be taken to mitigate risk factor of exposure to the virus.
The Senate also called on the Federal Government to liaise with the World Health Organisation and other relevant donor agencies to put in place the necessary plans in case of an escalation of the outbreak.
The motion was moved by Senator ALI WAKILI who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District, and supported by all lawmakers present at plenary.
