Nigeria Unveils Digital Cloud Policy to Attract Data Centre Investment

By Paul Chimodo

The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a National Digital Cloud Policy as part of efforts to attract investment into Nigeria’s data-centre and cloud-computing sector.

The policy is expected to provide a clearer regulatory framework for cloud service providers and create an environment that encourages both local and international investors to establish data centres in the country. The government believes increased adoption of cloud technology will also generate stable demand and encourage providers to expand their operations in Nigeria.

The initiative is coming amid growing demand for digital infrastructure driven by artificial intelligence, online services and the increasing digitisation of businesses and government operations. By adopting cloud technology on a larger scale, the government expects to strengthen the digital economy while reducing some of the infrastructure challenges facing technology businesses.

The proposed policy is also expected to support the development of Nigeria’s data-centre ecosystem by encouraging investment in reliable digital infrastructure. The government’s broader digital infrastructure plans, including improved connectivity and broadband access, are expected to complement the cloud policy and make Nigeria more attractive to technology investors.

Officials say the policy will ultimately help deepen cloud adoption, improve access to digital services and position Nigeria as a stronger destination for data-centre and technology investment in Africa.
