Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has reportedly approved a potential move for Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi as the Spanish giants look to strengthen their midfield.
According to reports, Real Madrid have renewed their interest in the 27-year-old, who joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad last summer in a deal worth €65 million. Zubimendi played an important role during his first season in north London, although his involvement reduced towards the end of the campaign.
The midfielder started only one of Arsenal’s final matches of the season, with Myles Lewis-Skelly preferred in midfield, including in the Champions League final.
The arrival of Bruno Guimaraes at Arsenal has reportedly raised concerns within Zubimendi’s camp over his role in Mikel Arteta’s plans, with discussions said to have taken place as his representatives assess his options.
Arsenal are reportedly open to allowing the Spain international to leave if a suitable offer is received, prompting Real Madrid to re-enter the race for his signature.
Mourinho is said to want greater experience and authority in Real Madrid’s holding midfield position and considers Zubimendi an ideal addition to his squad.
Contact has reportedly been made regarding the midfielder, while Zubimendi’s representatives have indicated that the player would welcome the opportunity to move to Madrid.
However, any transfer would depend on Arsenal’s asking price and Real Madrid’s willingness to meet the amount required to sign the midfielder after just one season in the Premier League.
Real Madrid are also considering Zubimendi as part of a wider midfield reshuffle, with the club reportedly assessing the futures of other midfielders, including Eduardo Camavinga.
