Labour Leader Raises Alarm Over Pensioners’ Safety in Rivers Verification Exercise

A labour leader and Director-General of the Rivers Solidarity for Good Governance, Opu-oyibo Lilly-West, has expressed deep concern over the safety of pensioners following an order by the Acting Head of Service directing more than 14,000 retirees to undergo verification within six days.

Lilly-West described the exercise as a “recipe for stampede” and warned it could lead to the death of elderly pensioners. He accused the sole administrator of showing disregard for the lives of workers and retirees, citing a previous stampede at the Obi Wali Cultural Centre as a grim reminder of the risks involved.

He further alleged that the directive confirmed his organisation’s long-standing claims of collusion between the Sole Administrator and the Acting Head of Service to short-change civil servants and pensioners.
