Iran Confirms World Cup Participation, Demands Guarantees From FIFA and Hosts

None

Iran has indicated that it will take part in this summer’s FIFA World Cup, but has demanded a series of guarantees from football governing body FIFA and the tournament’s host nations amid rising tensions over its participation.

The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) said the national team would compete in the tournament without compromising its beliefs, culture, and convictions, stressing that its participation must respect its national identity.

The development follows diplomatic friction after FFIRI president Mehdi Taj was reportedly denied entry into Canada ahead of last month’s FIFA Congress.

Taj later disclosed that Iran had submitted 10 conditions to FIFA regarding its participation in the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on June 11 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The demands are said to be part of efforts to secure assurances on travel, representation, and treatment of the Iranian delegation during the global competition.
