Former South-South Labour Party Chairman Prince Favour-Reuben Calls on Nigerians to Fight for Democratic Rights and Hold Leaders Accountable

Prince Favour-Reuben, former Chairman of the South-South Labour Party and currently the National Chairman of the South South Democratic Movement, has urged Nigerians to rise up and actively defend their democratic rights instead of merely complaining about governance issues.

In an interview with Today FM, Favour-Reuben emphasized the importance of holding political officeholders— including Senators, Members of the National Assembly, Governors, and Local Government Chairmen— accountable for the lack of tangible dividends of democracy. He lamented that many leaders, instead of developing their states and constituencies through the establishment of industries and empowerment initiatives, are siphoning public funds for personal gains.

Favour-Reuben expressed disappointment over the misappropriation of huge allocations meant for development, stating, “There is nothing to show for it. Nigeria ought to celebrate Democracy Day because, in his view, the worst democracy is still better than the best military rule.” He pointed out that Rivers State, in particular, remains stagnated due to the emergency rule imposed in the state.

He threatened that the South South Democratic Movement would ensure that every governor, senator, House of Representatives member, and local government chairman accounts for the funds allocated to them. “We will ensure transparency and accountability from all political leaders in the region,” he declared.

Favour-Reuben also expressed frustration over the underdevelopment of the South South region, despite the establishment of agencies such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), South South Development Commission (SSDC), and the Niger Delta Basin Authority. He lamented that these organizations have not effectively delivered on their mandates, leaving the region underdeveloped.

As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day, Favour-Reuben’s call serves as a reminder for citizens to actively participate in governance, demand accountability, and push for meaningful development in their regions.
