The joint military force, which is to be known as the Sahel G-5, will have troops drawn from Mauritania, Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso and Niger.
Its main mission will be to combat jihadist groups that are active in the region, as well as tackle human trafficking networks and illegal migration.
