DSS, Prison officials fight over custody of Emefiele

Emefiele’s re-arrest occurred on the premises of a Federal High Court in Lagos sitting in Ikoyi after Justice Nicholas Oweibo admitted the suspended apex bank Governor to bail in the sum of the twenty million naira.

The judge had ordered that Emefiele be remanded at the correctional center pending the fulfillment of the bail conditions.

However, officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service and operatives of the DSS, fought over the custody of Emefiele.

This prompted Emefiele’s lead counsel, Joseph Daudu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and other lawyers to raise an alarm about their client’s planned re-arrest by the secret police.

When the prison officials moved to take Emefiele into custody pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions, the secret police challenged them and it led to a fight.

Meanwhile; operatives of Department of State Services yesterday arrested a top official of Ikoyi Prison on the premises of Federal High Court in Lagos State.

The arrest may have been connected with the tussle for who keeps custody of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The Ikoyi prison official who was rough-handled and shuffled into the DSS vehicle was later released by the secret service operatives.

A mild drama played out at the Federal High Court, Lagos State, between DSS operatives and officials of Nigeria Correctional Service as they tussled over who keeps custody of Emefiele.
