Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria have rejected the Federal Government’s proposed plan to distribute free electricity meters to consumers, warning that the initiative may not be sustainable. The companies reportedly argued that without clear funding arrangements and a workable implementation framework, the policy could further strain the power sector.
In an added reaction, industry stakeholders said the disagreement highlights long-standing issues in the electricity market, including poor cost recovery and weak infrastructure. They cautioned that unless the concerns of DisCos are addressed, the metering gap and disputes over estimated billing may persist.
