Concerns Rise Over Proposed Return to Regional Governance in Nigeria

Their worry is rooted in the historical experience of the First Republic, where regional governance resulted in unequal representation and opportunities for minorities.

In an interview with Today FM, residents of Rivers State emphasized that the current state structure allows for greater inclusion of minority groups in decision-making processes, ensuring they have a voice.

They attributed Nigeria’s challenges to poor leadership rather than the system of government, calling for greater accountability, transparency, and inclusiveness to ensure all groups are involved in the nation’s progress.

As the National Assembly embarks on another process of reviewing the 1999 Constitution, senators remain divided over renewed calls for a return to the regional system of government.
