Our correspondent   CHINEDU IWUNNA gathered that the issue featured prominently at a recent meeting of the Joint Public Sector Negotiating Council of Nigeria which held in Kaduna.

The State Chairman of the Council, CHUKWU EMECHETA represented the Labour Movement, while the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Establishment and Training Bereau, stood in for the state government.

EMECHETA later told our correspondent in an interview that the recommendation at the meeting concerning the pension scheme would be transmitted to the state council for further action.

However; EMECHETA dismissed calls by some sections of Rivers workers for the abolition of the contributory pension scheme.

He said the controversies trailing the application of the pension scheme would be taken care of by steps adopted at the National level.

EMECHETA who is also the Vice Chairman of the Rivers State council of the Nigeria Labour Congress, kicked against a committee set by the Rivers State Government to handle pension related issues.

He said the committee has no representation from the Labour Movement, and any recommendations made by it would not be accepted by workers.
