Business owners and residents along Ikwerre Road in Port Harcourt are counting their losses after heavy rainfall on Thursday triggered severe flooding that submerged homes, shops, and major sections of the road.
The flooding disrupted commercial activities and left many residents struggling to salvage their belongings as water inundated homes and business premises.
Affected traders said the persistent rainfall destroyed goods worth thousands of naira and forced many businesses to shut down for the day.
Residents also disclosed that floodwaters entered their homes, compelling them to spend hours scooping out water in an effort to save their remaining property.
They appealed to the Rivers State Government to urgently construct and maintain effective drainage systems along the Ikwerre Road axis to prevent future flooding and protect lives, property, and businesses.
