Residents of Bille Kingdom in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State have raised concerns over the persistent threat posed by gas bubbling and flammable conditions in the community.
The situation has reportedly persisted for more than six months, with several government and non-governmental agencies visiting the area to assess the development.
However, no multinational company has so far taken responsibility for the pipeline believed to be responsible for the gas bubbling.
Today FM correspondent, Uchendu, visited the affected area alongside representatives of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Garden City and Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre to assess the situation firsthand and distribute relief materials to affected residents.
For safety reasons, automobiles were restricted during the movement around the community to minimise the risk of ignition. The team therefore moved on foot, particularly around locations identified as sensitive gas-bubbling points.
Residents who spoke with the visitors appealed to stakeholders, environmental experts, government agencies, relevant institutions, civil society organisations and responsible industry operators to urgently intervene and ensure that the situation receives the attention it deserves.
