The UNIPORT Chapter of ASUU is of the view that the action of the Governing Council suspending the Vice Chancellor on the basis of a report by the committee that investigated the recent unrest by students undermined the powers of the University’s Senate.

The position of UNIPORT ASUU was contained in a communiqué read to newsmen by the Chairman, AUSTEN SADO.

He said the UNIPORT ASUU would prefer that the Senate of the University is allowed to exercise its responsibility to investigate such matters.

The ASUU Chairman added that the suspension of the Vice Chancellor did not follow due process, as contained in the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions Amendement Act of 2013.

SADO noted that the union does not wish to interfere with the statutory duties of council but expressed worries that the suspension of the VC without proper investigation was contrary to democratic principles and the collegiate system which the university operates.

Correspondent SANDRA KENNETH reports that regular academic activities have since commenced in the university.
