APC Sweeps Rivers State Council Polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won 20 out of 23 local government areas (LGAs) in the just-concluded council elections in Rivers State.

The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr. Michael Odey, announced the results on Sunday at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has dominated politics in Rivers since 1999, won only three LGAs — Port Harcourt City, Obio-Akpor, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni.

APC also won the majority of councillorship seats, taking control of 20 councils, while PDP secured just three.

This marks the first time since the return of democracy in 1999 that APC has gained political dominance in Rivers State, a development observers say could reshape the state’s political future.

The elections were held under a state of emergency, with Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) serving as Sole Administrator following the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly earlier this year.
