The installation of the devices at entrances to the holy compound last weekend has been greeted with nightly clashes.
But the fortification of security followed the killing nearby of two Israeli police by Israeli Arab gunmen and called by Palestinian leaders for worshippers to gather at the site for Friday prayers.
Israel officials believe that the weapons used to kill the policemen were smuggled into the holy site, known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif, which translates to Noble Sanctuary, while the Jews call it the Temple Mount.
The latest security measure is in addition to a ban on men under the age of fifty from the holy site.
