Public primary and secondary schools in Rivers State resumed yesterday for a new academic session. However; activities were disrupted at state primary schools within Obio-Akpor Local Government Area due to a protest by security men who guard the premises. Pupils and teachers of the affected schools were shocked when they resumed in the morning to meet the gates of their various schools under locks. Some of the security guards in the schools monitored by our correspondents claimed they had not been paid their salaries for up to eight months. At the State Primary School, Rumueme; one of the security guards complained that life has been difficult for his family because of the backlog of unpaid salaries. Also speaking with our correspondent, the Head Mistress of the school, WALI STELLA appealed to the Rivers State Government to intervene to enable academic activities resume properly.
Meanwhile, in nearby secondary schools, normal activities have picked up, with high attendance rate of students. The Principal of Rumueme Girls Secondary School said she was impressed with the turnout of students on the first day of resumption. She warned that any teacher who showed lack of commitment to duty would face disciplinary action.
