Suspected armed thugs have reportedly attacked some residents of Egbelu Rumuekini in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, leaving some victims injured.
The incident reportedly occurred during a meeting of the Egbelu Rumuekini Landlords Association amid a lingering dispute over ownership of farmland in the area.
Egbelu farmland is one of the disputed areas between Aluu community in Ikwerre Local Government Area and Rumuekini community in Obio-Akpor. The land was reportedly sold by Aluu people to a renowned real estate company.
One of the victims, who spoke to a Today FM correspondent in a telephone interview, alleged that suspected armed thugs invaded the meeting and inflicted varying degrees of injuries on some members of the association.
The victim expressed concern that some of the landlords who sustained injuries were later taken into police custody.
He also accused one Chinedu, whom he identified as a Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer of the real estate company, of allegedly leading the group that attacked them.
He appealed to the government to urgently intervene in the matter to prevent further escalation and discourage citizens from resorting to self-help.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the Rumuekini Community Development Committee, Amakwele Ihunwo-Prince, expressed concern that despite a pending matter before the National Assembly, some individuals were still allegedly taking illegal actions against residents.
He called on security agencies and governments at all levels to urgently intervene and address the situation in the interest of peace.
