The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has unveiled its Department of Cardiology and launched advanced cardiac diagnostic services as part of efforts to strengthen specialised heart care in Rivers State and beyond.
The Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Professor Chizindu Alikor, disclosed this during the hospital’s 2026 Cardiology Day celebration held at the IDU Conference Hall in Port Harcourt, with the theme, “Strengthening Systems for Better Heart Health.”
Professor Alikor said the establishment of the Cardiology Department marks the beginning of a comprehensive cardiovascular centre that will provide specialised patient care, research, training and innovation.
He noted that the initiative would reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for advanced cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment.
The CMD added that the introduction of CT Coronary Angiography and Speckle Tracking Echocardiography services would enhance early detection, improve diagnosis and help save more lives.
The Head of the Department of Cardiology, Dr. Boma Oyan, described the development as a major milestone in advancing cardiovascular care, education and research in Rivers State.
She said the newly commissioned cardiology wards and imaging technologies would improve the hospital’s capacity to provide quality heart care while training future specialists.
Highlights of the event included the unveiling of the Department of Cardiology, opening of cardiology wards, and the launch of CT Coronary Angiography and Speckle Tracking Echocardiography services.
