Rivers Assembly Speaker, Alex Otti, Others Advocate Responsible Leadership at UNIPORT Governance Conference

The Rivers State House of Assembly has reaffirmed that it was the first state legislature in Nigeria to pass a law protecting women’s rights to inherit family property.

Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, made this known at the First International Conference on Advancing Politics and Governance for Sustainable Development, organised by the Centre for Politics at the University of Port Harcourt.

Amaewhule said the Assembly passed the Prohibition of the Curtailment of Women’s Right to Share in Family Property Law, 2022, which gives women equal rights to inherit family and community property. He also explained that the House recently amended the Local Government Law to align it with federal and subnational standards, especially on the tenure of elected officials.

Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, represented by Senator Darlington Nwokocha, urged politicians to view politics as a platform for development and not for division.

Chairman of the occasion, Prince Tonye Princewill, who also serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association, reminded leaders that leadership is a trust that must be accounted for.

The conference attracted participants from across Nigeria and other parts of the world, focusing on governance, leadership, and sustainable development.
