The Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Dr. Gift Worlu, has inaugurated two special committees to address the rising challenges of land grabbing and drug abuse within the council area.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held at the council headquarters, Dr. Worlu said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to fulfilling campaign promises focused on restoring order, promoting community safety, and enhancing sustainable development.
According to him, the increasing incidents of land grabbing pose a serious threat to communal peace and economic progress in the area. He noted that unchecked land disputes not only disrupt harmony among communities but also discourage investors who view such instability as a major risk to business operations.
“Land grabbing is not just a criminal act; it’s an attack on the social and economic stability of our communities. As a government, one of our core responsibilities is to protect lives, property, and the rights of our people,” Dr. Worlu stated.
He explained that the Committee Against Land Grabbing will work closely with traditional rulers, security agencies, and community leaders to identify and resolve disputes, enforce local regulations, and prevent illegal encroachments.
In his acceptance speech, the Chairman of the Committee Against Land Grabbing, Mr. Alex Wele, pledged the team’s commitment to executing its mandate with integrity and diligence. He assured residents that the committee would ensure fairness and transparency in all matters brought before it.
The second committee, focusing on the fight against drug abuse, is expected to commence immediate sensitization and rehabilitation programmes across the LGA. Dr. Worlu emphasized that drug abuse remains a major social concern affecting the youth and called for collective efforts to curb the menace.
He urged community stakeholders, including traditional leaders, religious groups, and youth organisations, to support the committees in creating a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Obio-Akpor.
“Our success as a government depends on the active participation of the people. We must work together to secure our land and safeguard our youths from the dangers of drug abuse,” Dr. Worlu added.
The event was attended by community leaders, council officials, security representatives, and members of the public who commended the council chairman’s proactive approach to tackling pressing local challenges.
