CLO Rejects Rivers LG Election Timetable, Questions Legitimacy of RISIEC Board

The Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) has rejected the timetable for the local government elections scheduled for August 30 in Rivers State.

In an interview, the CLO spokesperson in the state, Emmanuel Obe, said the newly constituted Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC) board lacks the legitimacy to conduct or reschedule elections.

Obe argued that the revised timetable violates statutory provisions, which require a minimum of 90 days’ notice ahead of any election. He also questioned the urgency behind conducting local government polls amid what he described as an emergency rule in the state, calling for transparency and adherence to due process.
